Sanctuary: Your Safe Space at Home

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

As someone who has struggled with prioritizing self-care, I can attest to the importance of having a dedicated space in my home for praying, relaxing, and healing.

When lockdown started and I found myself stuck inside all day long, I quickly recognized that I needed to find a place in my home that felt safe and conducive to healing. I needed to create a home sanctuary that felt like a refuge from the chaos of the outside world, not a prison.

For me, creating that home sanctuary was a game-changer in my self-care routine as well as my mental health. I started in my bedroom, specifically meditating in my closet. And that quickly branched out into yoga in my bedroom and bathing rituals in my bathtub. I decluttered my space and added calming decor like plants and candles. I also ritualized my nightly skincare routine and started prioritizing the physical care of my body.

Having this sacred space has helped me to disconnect from the stresses of daily life and tune into my own needs. It's becomes a place where I can let go of my worries and just be present in the moment. Making my home sanctuary has been crucial in my self-care journey. I schedule time in my day to spend in my sanctuary, whether it's just a few minutes or a full hour.

Overall, creating a space of sanctuary has been a powerful tool in my self-care routine. It's a space that is quiet, free of distractions, and dedicated to my well-being and the experience of sacred rest. Having that space has allowed me to prioritize my own needs and time with God in a way that I never thought was possible. If you're someone who struggles with self-care, I highly recommend creating a home sanctuary. It doesn't have to be a big or elaborate space - just a corner of a room will do. Make it your own and incorporate practices that work for you. You'll be amazed at the difference it can make in your overall well-being.

What would you add to your home sanctuary? Do you have a favorite place to experience Sacred Rest?
